IMPROVED CRITERIA FOR TRAFFIC SIGNALS AT INDIVIDUAL INTERSECTIONS INTERIM REPORT

A PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION OF EXISTING TRAFFIC SIGNALS WAS CONDUCTED ON SIMPLE INTERSECTIONS OF FOUR LANES CROSSING FOUR LANES. THE RESEARCH TASKS PERFORMED WERE'/1/ REVIEW OF PRIOR RESEARCH, /2/ FORMULATION OF A PRELIMINARY MODEL, /3/ TESTING AND REFINING THE MODEL, AND /4/ EXAMINATION OF CONTROLLERS AND CONTROL TECHNIQUES. A COMPREHENSIVE BIBLIOGRAPHY WAS ASSEMBLED AND STUDIED. SINCE IT APPEARED FROM THIS STUDY THAT THE INCLUSION OF ALL INFLUENTIAL FACTORS IN A COMPLEXITY PRECLUDING THE USE OF AN ANALYTIC MODEL, A DIGITAL COMPUTER SIMULATION MODEL WAS FORMULATED TO DESCRIBE TRAFFIC PERFORMANCE AT ISOLATED INTERSECTIONS. THE REFINED MODEL IS CONSIDERED VALUABLE IN SEVERAL RESPECTS' /1/ IT CONFORMS CLOSELY TO REALITY IN THAT A MIXTURE OF VEHICLE TYPES AND SIZES WITH VARYING CHARACTERISTICS OF DESIRED VELOCITY, ACCELERATION, DECELERATION, AND DRIVER DECISIONS AND RESPONSES FLOW THROUGH THE SYSTEM, /2/ IT IS SUFFICIENTLY DETAILED TO PERMIT MEASUREMENT OF A FULL RANGE OF TRAFFIC CHARACTERISTICS, EITHER FOR CONTROL PURPOSES OR TO GAGE PERFORMANCE, AND /3/ IT IS CHARACTERIZED BY FLEXIBILITY WHICH PERMITS MANY ALTERNATIVE CONTROL SCHEMES TO BE SUBMITTED FOR TESTING AND EVALUATION.
