DEFLECTOR KEEPS ENGINE OUT OF COMPARTMENT IN 60 MPH CRASH

THIS IS AN UPDATED REPORT ON EXPERIMENTS CONDUCTED BY THE CORNELL AERONAUTICAL LABORATORY TO ASCERTAIN THE FEASIBILITY OF USING A FIXED RAMP ON A REINFORCED FIREWALL TO DEFLECT THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION OF AN AUTOMOBILE BELOW THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT DURING FRONTAL BARRIER IMPACTS, THE BODY RIDING UP AND OVER. IN THE PREVIOUS TEST SERIES VELOCITIES OF 40 MPH WERE USED; IN THE PRESENT SERIES, 60 MPH. IN CRASHES MADE AFTER MODIFICATION, THE WORST DAMAGE TO ANY COMPARTMENT WAS A RIP IN THE FLOORPAN FROM A GRAZING BLOW BY THE ENGINE. TEST METHODOLOGY, REPORTING, AND EVALUATION ARE DESCRIBED. DUMMIES AND AIR BAGS WERE INCORPORATED INTO THE TESTS.
