PSYCHOPHYSICAL ASSESSMENT OF WHOLE-BODY VIBRATION

INCREASING THE SPEED OF TRANSPORTATION AND THE SIZE OF HEAVY EQUIPMENT OFTEN BRINGS ABOUT INCREASES IN THE VIBRATION LEVEL THAT PASSENGERS AND OPERATORS MUST ENDURE. THERE IS A SERIOUS NEED TO INCREASE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE EFFECTS OF VIBRATION ON MAN, AND EFFORTS ARE CURRENTLY BEING MADE TO ASSESS THE MECHANICAL, PHYSIOLOGICAL, AND PSYCHOLOGICAL RESPONSE OF MAN TO DIVERSE VIBRATION ENVIRONMENTS. THE METHODS DISCUSSED HERE PROVIDE MORE SYSTEMATIC AND QUANTITATIVE CHARACTERIZATIONS OF SUBJECTIVE RESPONSE TO VIBRATION THAN PREVIOUS APPROACHES WHICH HAVE RELIED HEAVILY ON QUALITATIVE DESCRIPTIONS. USING THE METHODS OF MAGNITUDE ESTIMATION AND INTENSITY MATCHING, CURVES OF EQUAL SUBJECTIVE VIBRATION INTENSITY WERE CONSTRUCTED OVER THE FREQUENCY RANGE FROM 3.5 TO 20 HZ /AUTHOR/
