INVESTIGATION OF TIRE WEAR

INVESTIGATION WAS CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE THE RELATIVE EFFECT OF THE VARIOUS ROAD SURFACES UPON TIRE WEAR AND FIND A MONEY VALUE TO ASSIGN TO EACH. THE ORIGINAL PROGRAM OF THE TIRE WEAR TESTS CONTEMPLATED A COMBINED FIELD AND LABORATORY INVESTIGATION. FOR THE FIELD WORK A REPRESENTATIVE CAR AND TIRE EQUIPMENT WAS SELECTED AND RUN AT DETERMINED SPEEDS AT TYPICAL LEVEL STRETCHES OF THE VARIOUS ROAD SURFACES. A DODGE TOURING CAR EQUIPPED WITH 32 BY 4 INCH HIGH-PRESSURE CORD TIRES OR 30 BY 5.77 INCH BALLOON TIRES IS USED. THESE TIRES WERE TESTED ON THE FOLLOWING ROAD SURFACES: PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE, MONOLITHIC BRICK, BITUMINOUS FILLED BRICK, IOWA GRAVEL, CHERT GRAVEL, AND BITUMINOUS MACADAM WITHOUT SEAL COAT. A TABLE IS PRESENTED WHICH SHOWS THE EFFECT OF ROUGHNESS AND SHARP PROTRUDING AGGREGATE IN A BITUMINOUS ROAD UPON THE WEAR OF INSIDE AND OUTSIDE TIRES. WEAR INDICES ARE PRESENTED FOR TIRES ON THE VARIOUS ROAD SURFACES. SEVERAL TABLES OF DATA ARE PRESENTED SHOWING FUEL CONSUMPTION FOR DIFFERENT TYPES OF MOTOR VEHICLES ON VARIOUS ROAD SURFACES. LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS ARE IN PROGRESS TO COLLECT DATA ON THE EFFECT OF INFLATION, TEMPERATURE, MOISTURE AND TREAD RUBBER QUALITY UPON TREAD WEAR. INVESTIGATIONS WILL CONCLUDE THE EFFECT OF SPEED, SIZE AND WEIGHT OF VEHICLE UPON TREAD WEAR, ALSO ROUGHNESS OF ROAD SURFACE.
