WIND RESISTANCE OF MOTOR VEHICLES

THE ATMOSPHERIC RESISTANCE OF MOTOR VEHICLES WAS STUDIED. A WIND TUNNEL WAS DESIGNED AND CONSTRUCTED LARGE ENOUGH TO ACCOMODATE AUTOMOBILES. EQUATIONS FOR RESISTANCE WERE CALCULATED FROM THE OBSERVED DATA BY THE METHOD OF AVERAGES. THE EQUATION DEVELOPED TO DETERMINE THE INTENSITY OF WIND RESISTANCE FROM WIND MEASUREMENTS ACCOUNTS FOR THE TOTAL WIND RESITANCE IN POUNDS, THE PROJECTED CROSS-SECTION AREA OF THE VEHICLE AND SQUARE FEET, AND THE VELOCITY IN MILES PER HOUR WITH RESPECT TO THE VEHICLE.
