Austroads provisional specification for multigrade binders
Refined bitumens conforming to Australian Standard AS2008 have been manufactured to satisfy a wide range of paving applications with the harder class binders applied in heavy duty asphalt pavements to resist the deforming action of traffic at high service temperatures. Unfortunately, these binders can also be stiffer at low temperatures leading to increased brittleness and potential reductions in surfacing life. Newly formulated multigrade binders have been developed to provide unproved deformation resistance at high service temperatures while retaining a desirable level of flexibility at low temperatures. This specification outlines the requirements for multigrade binders for use in both sprayed sealing and asphalt applications and applies to refined products free of polymer modifiers used in polymer modified binders (PMBs).
