WASTED SAFETY GOLDMINE

THE NATIONAL DRIVER REGISTER WAS CREATED BY THE U.S. CONGRESS IN 1960 TO MAINTAIN RECORDS IN INDIVIDUALS-NOW NUMBERING MORE THAN THREE MILLION-WHO HAVE HAD THEIR DRIVER LICENSES SUSPENDED, REVOKED, OR WITHDRAWN. HOWEVER, THIS INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE ONLY TO STATES AND THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. LEGISLATION IS PENDING IN BOTH HOUSES OF CONGRESS TO EXTEND THE AVAILABILITY TO CITIES AND COUNTRIES, WITH THE AIM OF DETECTING APPLICANTS WITH VIOLATIONS IN OTHER JURISDICTIONS. ONE OF THE MAJOR SUPPORTERS OF THE BILLS IS THE PRIVATE TRUCK COUNCIL OF AMERICA, WHICH WANTS THE REGISTER OPENED TO FLEET OPERATORS AND OTHER EMPLOYERS OF VEHICLE OPERATORS. AT PRESENT, ABOUT 77,000 SEARCHES OF THE COMPUTERIZED REGISTER FILES ARE MADE EACH WORKING DAY. SINCE ITS ESTABLISHMENT, THE REGISTER HAS IDENTIFIED ABOUT 900,000 UNSAFE, UNQUALIFIED, OR OTHERWISE INCOMPETENT DRIVERS WHO WERE REFUSED A LICENSE TO DRIVE A MOTOR VEHICLE. ABOUT 14,000 FALSIFIED APPLICATIONS ARE ALSO IDENTIFIED EACH YEAR.
