A safety management program for public transport
Busway operators are interested in the safe, orderly and expeditious flow of bus traffic along the busway. Public awareness of public transport safety is high. Safety is an issue and a selling point when marketing busway travel to potential customers. A safety management program contains a systematically researched set of policies and procedures for effectively managing and ensuring the safety of any operation. In the context of the busway operation, a safety management program is a product of several disciplines and approaches. The safety management program borrows liberally from: (1) risk management; (2) quality management; (3) project management. A safety management program is an essential element of the organisational culture. It will provide pro-active plans to deal with events and circumstances and helps focus attention and effort on areas with the greatest potential to affect the safe operation of any venture.
