States of fleet safety around Australia

In December 1999 government officers from a number of States and Territories came together in Canberra for the first meeting of the Fleet Safety Forum. Those attending could see the benefits of working with other agencies to improve road safety by improving fleet safety. Since that first meeting momentum has gathered to the point where every jurisdiction is involved, and most attend the Forum gatherings held six monthly. A range of approaches are being pursued, including model best practice driving safety management systems, general advice via brochures and the web, fleet safety manual, videos targeting promotion of fleet safety in organisations, reducing driver fatigue and vehicle selection advice. In addition, some energy is being put towards developing training in fleet safety for OHS representatives. The Fleet Safety Forum has provided a very useful basis for exchange of ideas and promotion of fleet safety generally and there is now some genuine commitment to formulating a co-operative approach to progressing fleet safety in Australia.
