TOWARD AUTOMATIC VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION

THIS SUMMARY REPORT OF A MEETING CONCERN AUTOMATIC VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION CITIES VARIOUS SYSTEMS OF FULLY AUTOMATIC VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION WHICH ARE BEING DEVELOPED IN RESPONSE TO A REQUEST BY THE INTERNATIONAL BRIDGE, TUNNEL AND TURNPIKE ASSOCIATION. THOUGH THE PROJECT IS BEING TESTED BY THE NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE AND PORT AUTHORITY, THE STANDARDS BEING USED ARE DEVELOPED WITH A NATIONWIDE SYSTEM IN MIND. AVI SYSTEM EQUIPMENT INCLUDES A TRANSPONDER CARRIED ON BOARD THE VEHICLE TO BE IDENTIFIED, AND THE INTERROGATOR IN OR BY THE ROAD WHERE THE VEHICLE IS TO BE IDENTIFIED. THE THREE TYPES OF AVI DEVICES DEVELOPED ARE OPTICAL, MICROWAVE, AND RADIO FREQUENCY. TEST RESULTS OF THE VARIOUS TYPES OF SYSTEMS ARE CITED AND EVALUATED, AND COST STATISTICS ARE GIVEN. MULTIPLE APPLICATIONS OF AVI SYSTEMS ARE CONSIDERED, SUCH AS REVENUE COLLECTION, SAFETY AND LAW ENFORCEMENT, VEHICLE MANUFACTURE, ETC. THERE IS MUCH CONTROVERSY OVER THE USE OF AN AVI SYSTEM, AND SUCH ISSUES AS "INVASION OF PRIVACY" ARE DISCUSSED. THE NEED FOR DISSEMINATION OF INFORMATION ABOUT THE AVI SYSTEM IS CONSIDERED, AND METHODS OF ACQUAINTING APPROPRIATE AGENCIES ARE DECIDED UPON.
