The aim of this paper is to: (1) provide some background to the extent of the roadside hazard problem; (2) show how the "clear zone" concept can be used to identify potential safety issues; (3) suggest some treatment philosophies to reduce the incidence and severity of crashes with roadside objects; (4) suggest a method for prioritising potentially hazardous objects for treatment.
