TELECOMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS FOR HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION AND OPERATIONS

TELECOMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY AND ORGANIZATION TEND TO VARY FROM STATE TO STATE, MAINLY FOR TWO REASONS: THE STATES HAVE DIFFERENT NEEDS, AND INTEGRATION OF THE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT INTO THE STATE NETWORK TAKES DIFFERENT FORMS. THE PRESENT REPORT REVIEWS OVER A DOZEN SYSTEMS, MOST OF THEM AT THE STATE LEVEL. THE TECHNOLOGICAL ELEMENTS COVERED ARE TELEPHONE SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT, TELETYPEWRITER SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT, COMPUTERS AND REMOTE TERMINALS, RADIO SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT, FACSIMILE SYSTEMS, MICROWAVE SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT, SECURITY SYSTEMS, TELEVISION SYSTEMS, AND INTERCONNECTION. TWO CHAPTERS ARE DEVOTED TO PLANNING FOR EXPANDED TELECOMMUNICATION SYSTEMS, AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS SUPPORT TO TRAFFIC OPERATIONS. A CONCLUDING CHAPTER IDENTIFIES AND DISCUSSES BRIEFLY SIX CONSIDERATIONS THAT ARE COMMON TO ALL STATES: STANDARDIZATION OF TECHNOLOGY; INTEGRATION OF APPLICATIONS; COST PROBLEMS; DUPLICATION OF CAPABILITY, FACILITIES, AND PERSONNEL; TOTAL MAINTENANCE NEEDS; AND IMPROPER USE OF CURRENT SYSTEMS.
