NEW DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS FOR SAFETY--AN OVERVIEW

THIS PAPER SUGGESTS A PHILOSOPHY OF DESIGN AND DISCUSSES BRIEFLY SOME IMPORTANT ELEMENTS OF HUMAN FACTORS AND SOME SELECTED DESIGN CONCEPTS AND DESIGN ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES RELATED TO HIGHWAY SAFETY. THE CONCEPT OF DRIVER EXPECTANCY IS SUGGESTED AS A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCIPLE OF HIGHWAY DESIGN. SUCH DESIGN CONCEPTS AS ANTICIPATORY SIGHT DISTANCE, A PRIORITY OF ACTION REGARDING ROADSIDE OBSTACLES, AND THE SAFETY IMPLICATIONS OF CLEAR SPAN (UP TO 200 FEET) TUBULAR SIGN SUPPORTS ARE DISCUSSED. THREE-DIMENSIONAL DESIGN ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES ARE PRESENTED. THEY COVER THE USE OF COMPUTER PERSPECTIVES, LOW-COST DESIGN MODELS, AND THE ARTIST-SKETCHBOARD PICTORIAL TECHNIQUE. TWO SAFETY ANALYSIS PROCEDURES ARE DISCUSSED IN DETAIL: (1) SIGHT DISTANCE PROFILE AND (2) A SPEED-DIFFERENTIAL PROFILE RELATING THE SPEEDS OF TRUCKS AND CARS AT POINTS ALONG THE ALIGNMENT. /AUTHOR/
