A simulation study of ramp metering on urban freeways

Ramp metering is one of the ITS applications which aim to tackle the freeway congestion problem. It is applied at the urban freeway where the recurring congestion occurs when demand exceeds the capacity. Ramp meter is applied at the ramp entrance to control the entrance of the ramp vehicle to the freeway. By breaking the platoon entering from the ramp, the mainline traffic condition will be smoother thus increasing the vehicle travel speed and total throughput. It could also reduce the travel time. Simulation models are built to investigate the effects that ramp metering would bring to the road users. Two models have been developed which are non-metering and with metering. The general purpose simulation package, SIMUL8 was used to develop the models. The ramp metering effectiveness is studied by comparing some measurements such as average total travel time, total throughput and ramp delay.
