Rush hour lanes: the case of the Venice-Mestre beltway

In Spring 2003 the use of hard shoulders as rush hour lanes was put into operation along the Venice-Mestre beltway. This is the top feature of an Intelligent Transport System that combines various different functionalities: traffic monitoring, automatic incident detection, video surveillance, travellers' information systems, ramp metering, lane control system. The paper presents the results achieved during the first period of operation of the system. The significant improvement of the traffic conditions (improved level of service) and the reduction of road accidents are some the measures of the validity of the solutions implemented.
