Description of architecture and demonstration of SAFE TUNNEL system

The paper presents the architecture and demonstrators of SAFE TUNNEL, a project co-funded by the European Commission. The goal of the project is to develop new solutions able to reduce accidents in road tunnels by means of preventive measures based on vehicle-infrastructure cooperation using a wireless public network as communication link. In the first two years, requirements and specifications have been defined as well as the test site. Demonstrators (two equipped trucks and a control center) are under preparation and will be validated by mid 2004.
