Guide to traffic engineering practice: roadway lighting

This publication is a general guide to road lighting standards and practice applicable to traffic routes and to a lesser extent, to local collector and minor roads. It provides a brief introduction to the theory and basic principles involved in lighting design, along with a more detailed coverage of roadway lighting practices generally. It is emphasised that road lighting design and practice is based on well-established principles and experience. However, the warrants and standards associated with it need to be applied with flexibility and judgement to account for the wide variation in site, traffic and environmental conditions that occur in practice. The design and provision of public lighting is often arranged separately from other road improvements. It is therefore important for its design, installation and maintenance to be properly integrated with road design and traffic management practices to enhance the full achievement of traffic and community objectives. The application of this document is discretionary, and Road Authorities may vary their practice according to local circumstances and policies.
