Heavy vehicle safety: issues and countermeasures
This publication focuses primarily on issues related to heavy trucks, as they represent one of our greatest road safety challenges. Heavy trucks travel more than 3.5 billion kilometres per year in NSW. Although they make up around 2 per cent of vehicles registered in NSW, heavy trucks represent 6 per cent of the kilometres travelled in the State and are involved in on average 17 per cent of fatal crashes, Because of the national nature of the heavy truck industry, especially the long haul/interstate industry. a nationally coordinated approach is needed for many of the road safety issues to be most effective.
