EXPERIMENT ON AUTOMOBILE FIRE IN ACTUAL ROAD TUNNEL

A SERIES OF EXPERIMENTS ON AUTOMOBILE FIRES WERE PERFORMED BY BURNING SEVERAL CARS AND TRUCKS IN A ROAD TUNNEL (384 M-LONG) ON THE OLD KURIKO NATIONAL HIGHWAY. FIRE FEATURES, TEMPERATURE DISTRIBUTION IN TUNNEL, GENERATION OF HAZARDOUS GAS, INFLUENCES ON THE TUNNEL LINING AND SO FORTH WERE STUDIED IN RELATION TO THE WIND VELOCITIES IN THE TUNNEL. THE PROBLEM OF DISASTERS IN TUNNELS MUST BE STUDIED FROM TWO SIDES: TREATMENT OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS AND FIRE-EXTINGUISHING MECHANICS ON ONE SIDE AND TRAFFIC CONTROL ON THE OTHER. THE RESEARCH WAS CONDUCTED ONLY ON A SMALL SCALE BECAUSE OF THE DIFFICULTIES IN GAINING SUITABLE TUNNELS FOR EXPERIMENT AND BECAUSE OF ACCOMPANYING DANGER. THE OUTLINE OF THE EXPERIMENT IS REPORTED. /JRA/
