SIGNAL SYSTEM PLANNING IN TOKYO

A BRIEF DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF STAGES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF A WIDE-AREA TRAFFIC SIGNAL CONTROL SYSTEM IN THE CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT AND OF COMPLEMENTARY ARTERIAL SYSTEMS ON THE MAIN RADIAL LOOP ROUTES OUTSIDE TOKYO'S CBD. THE PROGRAM WENT INTO EFFECT IN 1963 WITH A DISPLAY OF INTERSECTION PERFORMANCE. A YEAR LATER THE ARTERIAL SYSTEMS PORTION OF THE MASTER PLAN WAS INITIATED, AND IN 1967 A SWITCH FROM ANALOG TO DIGITAL MASTERS WAS MADE. THE PRESENT CENTRALLY CONTROLLED INSTALLATION CONSISTS OF 10 ARTERIAL SYSTEMS OF 15 TO 20 INTERSECTIONS EACH, AND THE COMPUTER HAS CAPACITY FOR 15 MORE SUCH SYSTEMS. HANDLING OF DETECTOR INFORMATION, CAPABILITIES, AND DISPLAYS ARE MENTIONED. THE PLANNED SYSTEM INCLUDES A LARGER GEOGRAPHIC AREA, HAS MORE SOPHISTICATED COMMUNICATION AND CONTROLS, AND EXERCISES GREATER COMMAND OVER TRAFFIC PATTERNS AND FLOWS.
