AUTO PARKING AT A PROFIT

WHEN THE FIVE MEN OF THE WHITE PLAINS, NEW YORK, PARKING AUTHORITY SAT DOWN FOR THEIR FIRST OFFICIAL MEETING, JUNE 7, 1947, THEY LAUNCHED A NEW CONCEPT IN MUNICIPAL TRAFFIC AND AUTO PARKING CONTROL THAT HAS SINCE BEEN WIDELY COPIED IN OTHER CITIES THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES. IN SUMMING UP THE FIRST TWENTY YEARS OF OPERATION OF THE WHITE PLAINS PARKING AUTHORITY, IT IS APPARENT THAT IT HAS PROCEEDED A LONG WAY TOWARD THE GOAL VISUALIZED BY ITS FOUNDERS. BY PROVIDING THOUSANDS OF PARKING SPACES, IT HAS TAKEN CARS OFF THE STREETS AND PUT THEM INTO METERED PARKING AREAS. THUS ACHIEVING A WORKABLE CONTROL OF TRAFFIC AND PARKING THAT HAS HELPED INCREASE THE CITY'S COMMERCIAL ACTIVITY AND HAS BEEN FINANCIALLY SUCCESSFUL WITHOUT AN INCREASE IN COST TO THE TAXPAYER. /AUTHOR/
