DOES AN ANTI-LOCKING BRAKING SYSTEM MEAN SAFER TRAFFIC? A SWEDISH INVESTIGATION WILL GIVE THE ANSWER

AN AGREEMENT TO COOPERATE IN TRAFFIC SAFETY MATTERS WAS SIGNED BY THE SWEDISH AND U.S. GOVERNMENTS. THIS MEANS THAT SWEDEN IS NOW CONDUCTING RESEARCH INTO THE EXPERIMENTAL SAFETY VEHICLE, WHICH WAS INITIATED BY THE U.S. MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT. THE PRESENT PROJECT IS CARRIED OUT BY SAAB-SCANIA CO AND VOLVO CO IN COOPERATION WITH THE NATIONAL SWEDISH TRAFFIC SAFETY BOARD AND THE DIRECTION FOR TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT. THE AIM IS TO INVESTIGATE MANEUVRABILITY WHEN BRAKING. THE FOLLOWING STUDIES WILL BE CARRIED OUT: 1. ANALYSIS OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENT INVESTIGATIONS, IN ORDER TO DEFINE THE TYPES OF ACCIDENTS WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN INFLUENCED BY COMBINED BRAKING AND STEERING. 2. SIMULATION OF THESE CRITICAL TYPES OF ACCIDENTS, ON TEST TRACKS AND WITH MATHEMATICAL MODELS. 3. STUDIES AND EVALUATIONS OF CERTAIN CONSTRUCTION CHARACTERISTICS AND ROAD CONDITIONS, AND DEVELOPMENT OF TEST METHODS FOR INSPECTING THESE CHARACTERISTICS AND CONDITIONS. 4. ANALYSIS OF POINTS 1, 2, AND 3, WITH A VIEW TO ESTABLISHING CRITERIA FOR AN OPTIMUM BRAKING SYSTEM AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR METHODS OF MEASUREMENT AND MEASUREMENT STANDARDS. THE PROJECT IS BY VOLVO CO., SAAB-SCANIA CO., AND THE DIRECTION FOR TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT. /TRRL/
