Comparison of skid resistance value from different equipment
Based on the formulation of "International Friction Index" carried out by PIARC in the "International experiment to compare and harmonize texture and skid resistance measurements", the objective of this experiment was to validate the relationships between measures of friction obtained with SCRIM (SFC) and GripTester (GN), the two more used devices in Italy. The SCRIM and the GripTester device were tested for about 100 kilometres of roads with different values of adherence and macro-texture, in a range of operating speed between 30 and 80 kilometres per hour. Analyzing the survey results, it was also considered the geometry of the road, curves in particular, which could influence measured friction values due to the type of acquisition system of the Griptester device. As regards the suitability of the correlation proposed by the IFI, it can be concluded from the experiment that it is applicable to the equipment used and the pavement analyzed. The analysis of the experimental data was completed by investigating the effects of variations in the texture and slip speed on the determination of the IFI.
