ELECTRIC CAR: WILL IT REALLY GO?
CONCERN FOR TOTAL ENERGY USE DOES NOT APPEAR TO OFFER MAJOR MOTIVATION FOR THE SUBSTITUTION OF ELECTRIC CARS FOR GASOLINE CARS. FROM ESTIMATES IT WOULD APPEAR THAT THE PRIMARY FUEL ENERGY REQUIRMENTS OF COMPARABLE ELECTRIC AND GASOLINE AUTOMOBILES ARE QUITE SIMILAR. TWO SCENARIOS ARE SUGGESTED HERE IMPLYING THAT THE ELECTRIC AUTOMOBILE MAY BE AN IMPORTANT FACTOR IN THE ENERGY CRISIS. THE ELECTRIC CAR WILL LEAD TO A NEED FOR MORE ELECTRIC POWER PLANTS AND FUELS FOR THESE PLANTS. HOWEVER, IF A PLENTIFUL FUEL, SUCH AS COAL OR URANIUM IS USED CLEANLY AND SAFELY, THE ELECTRIC AUTOMOBILE MAY BE AN ATTRACTIVE ALTERNATIVE TO THE GAS-BURNING, AND POLLUTING, INTERNAL-COMBUSTION AUTOMOBILE.
