TREES AND LANDFORMS REDUCE TRAFFIC NOISE POLLUTION

THE ARTICLE DISCUSSES TESTS MADE TO INVESTIGATE THE EFFECT OF TREES ON THE REDUCTION OF TRAFFIC NOISE IN RURAL AND URBAN AREAS. TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT USING RECORDINGS OF TRAFFIC NOISE PROJECTED THROUGH BELTS OF TREES AND SHRUBS THE REDUCED NOISE IS BEING MEASURED AT VARIOUS DISTANCES BEHIND THE BELT. THE TESTS WERE THEN REPEATED OVER SIMILAR SURFACES WITHOUT ANY TREES. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE GIVEN CONCERNING WIDTH OF TREE BELT, DISTANCE FROM HIGHWAY AND HEIGHTS OF TREES, FOR A GIVEN REDUCTION IN NOISE. /TRRL/
