COMPUTER MODEL SIMULATES AIR POLLUTION OVER ROADS

A BRIEF DESCRIPTION IS PRESENTED OF EXPLOR (EXAMINATION OF POLLUTION LEVELS OF ROADWAYS), A COMPUTER MODELING TECHNIQUE WHICH AIDS IN DESIGNING ROADS THAT MINIMIZE THE EFFECTS OF POLLUTION FROM VEHICLE EMISSIONS. THE COMPUTER SIMULATION TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE TOPOGRAPHY SURROUNDING THE ROAD, WEATHER CONDITIONS, AND THE EFFECTS OF ADVECTION AND EDDY DISPERSION PROCESSES ON POLLUTANTS AND PROVIDES INFORMATION FOR THE SPECIFIC POLLUTANTS ATTRIBUTABLE TO VEHICLE EMISSIONS-CARBON MONOXIDE, UNBURNED HYDROCARBONS, NITROGEN OXIDE, NITROGEN DIOXIDE, AND PARTICULATE LEAD. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT EXPLOR CAN BE USED TO PREDICT ACCEPTABLE LAND USE NEAR ROADS, THE POLLUTION LEVELS GENERATED BYNSTOP- AND-GO DRIVING AS OPPOSED TO CONSTANT HIGH-SPEED DRIVING, AND THE EFFECTS OF ROAD DESIGN ON POLLUTANT LEVELS. /TRRL/
