MINNEAPOLIS SKYWAY SYSTEM

MINNEAPOLIS HAS JUST OPENED UP ITS TWELFTH SKYWAY FOR PEDESTRIAN USE IN THE CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT. THE SKYWAY CONNECTS ELEVEN CENTRAL BUSINESS BLOCKS OF RETAIL AND OFFICE ACTIVITIES; IT PROTECTS THE PEDESTRIAN FROM VEHICULAR TRAFFIC, AIR POLLUTION AND THE WEATHER. SINCE THE FIRST SKYWAY WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 1962 IT HAS HAD A SUBSTANTIAL VOLUME OF USE. THE ENTIRE SKYWAY SYSTEM IS SCHEDULED FOR COMPLETION IN 1995, IT WILL BE COMPOSED OF TWO MAIN LINES RUNNING NORTH-SOUTH AND EAST-WEST WITH FEEDER LINES TYING IN SURROUNDING BLOCKS. IT WILL CONNECT FRINGE PARKING WITH THE BUSINESS DISTRICT, INCORPORATING ENCLOSED COURTS, WELL LIGHTED, WIDE, AIRY, HEATED AND AIR CONDITIONED CORRIDORS. CONNECTIONS TO THE SKYWAY ARE BY ESCALATORS AND ELEVATORS. THUS FAR THE FINANCING HAS BEEN DONE PRIVATELY WITH THE THOUGHT THAT THE CITY WILL TAKE OVER LATER. AT SOME POINT THE PROPERTIES BENEFITTING FROM THE SKYWAY WOULD PAY AN EXTRA TAX THUS PAYING THE CITY BACK. MAINTENANCE, TOO, WOULD BE PAID FOR BY THE CITY.
