Fatigue management within the rail industry: review of regulatory approach

Fatigue can be a direct or indirect cause of serious incidents in the rail industry. It is an important factor in assessing the Fitness for Duty of rail safety workers. Currently there is no uniform method of gauging the assessment of working hours in terms of their impact on fatigue levels on rail workers. A number of current approaches may take into account best practice. This discussion paper examines the current practices in Australia and overseas, alternative options available for consideration, and best practice in other industries. It seeks comments from stakeholders that will be used to develop recommendations on a preferred position to the Australian Transport Council.
