HOW MUCH ASBESTOS DO VEHICLES EMIT?

A COMPREHENSIVE INVESTIGATION OF GAS AND PARTICULATE EMISSIONS FROM AUTOMOTIVE BRAKES AND CLUTCHES DURING ACTUAL VEHICLE OPERATION SHOWS THAT, ON THE AVERAGE, MORE THAN 99.7% OF THE ASBETOS EMITTED IS CONVERTED TO OTHER PRODUCTS. THE CONTRIBUTION TO THE ATMOSPHERE IS ESTIMATED TO BE 5060 LB/YR, OR 3.2% OF THE TOTAL ASBESTOS EMITTED. OF THE REMAINDER, IT IS ESTIMATED THAT 85.6% DROPS TO THE GROUND, WHILE 11.2% IS RETAINED IN THE BRAKES. A SERIES OF TESTS WAS PERFORMED WITH ORIGINAL, PARTIALLY RELINED, AND FULLY RELINED EQUIPMENT ON AUTOMOBILES, AND THE RESULTS WERE EXTRAPOLATED TO OTHER VEHICLE TYPES. THE TEST SERIES, THE METHOD OF COLLECTING THE ASBESTOS, AND THE MEASUREMENTS OF ASBESTOS CONTENT ARE DESCRIBED. THE FINDINGS ARE GIVEN FOR ORIGINAL AND RELINED EQUIPMENT, NORMAL AND ABUSIVE DUTY, DISC AND DRUM ASSEMBLIES, AND PADS.
