Photogrammetric measurement of motor vehicle crush depth

The high rate of fatalities on Irish roads continues to keep road safety and accident prevention to the fore. To improve accident prevention and safety our understanding of what occurs prior to and during a collision must also improve. A major step in reconstructing a collision is accurately determining the pre-impact speed. There are a number of computer programmes such as PC Crash and Ed Crash, which use empirical methods of determining pre-impact speed; they all require crush depth measurements. This paper discusses the use of digital photogrammetry in accident reconstruction and demonstrates that its use is justified because of the accuracy that can be obtained. An over the counter digital camera (Olympus C5060) and a commercial software package (PhotoModeler Pro 5) were used to keep costs to a minimum. In order to establish the limit of accuracy of digital photogrammetry with PhotoModeler as a measurement technique, regularly shaped objects were modelled and measured, and compared to the actual dimensions. The results of these accuracy experiments are given in this paper.
