A virtual CDL test: what is it and what can it do for the community?
Currently no performance based recertification process exists to ensure the capability of the driving workforce or to provide diagnosis of potential problems, either from lack of experience, or improper training. CATSS proposed a blended technology, diagnostic alternative using CBT and Simulation as a cost effective solution: the "Virtual Check Ride (VCR)." The objective of the VCR is to create an assessment suite that mirrors the actual CDL test and its three major components (general knowledge, pre/post trip inspections, and vehicle control/operations). This paper will describe briefly the VCR, how it was designed, what it consists of and what we see as its potential for the future of driver training. The remainder of the paper will provide a detailed report on the validation study, which will include over 700 driver/subjects, 5 separate companies, assessing both experienced driver and trainees, on at least 2 different types of simulators.
