Truck simulator validation ("SimVal") training effectiveness study

The FMCSA-sponsored Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) Truck Simulator Validation Training Effectiveness Study ("SimVal") is examining the question of whether simulator technology can enhance tractor-trailer driver training and on-the-job performance. In particular, entry-level training primarily employing a simulator will be compared to conventional behind-the-wheel (BTW) training in a tractor-trailer. The study is also employing simulation and BTW tests, and on-job performance measures, to evaluate the benefits of accredited formal driver training in comparison to informal training and also to shorter, commercial drivers license (CDL)-focused training programs. Thus, the study is an assessment of the benefits of different methods of driver skill training (primarily simulator training vs. BTW) and also a general assessment of the benefits of various amounts of training (full curriculum vs. CDL-focused vs. no formal training). In addition, the study is demonstrating the advanced capabilities of truck simulators to replicate emergency and evasive maneuvers for testing and training both novice and experienced commercial drivers on these maneuvers.
