Transducer for the measurement of horizontal stresses at the tyre pavement interface
A transducer was designed to obtain quantitative data on the shear stressing of surfacings by vehicles in the field. The transducer consists of two metal plates separated by a rubber interlayer. The design allows applied forces to be resolved in two horizontal directions. It was concluded that the transducer has the capacity to provide appropriate data for the Austroads Performance Based Specification projects and should also be a useful research tool for the examination of vehicle dynamics and pavement studies. Calibration and data collection protocols will be further developed as the project moves into the data collection phase.
