Prioritization of ITS options based on commercial vehicle crash reduction potential and cost-benefit assessment

The purpose of this work is to document the relative potential of advanced technologies toward the improvement of Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) safety. The goal of this paper is to properly guide the commercial vehicles industry on best technology adoption practices based on safety and cost-benefit analyses considerations. Based on a comprehensive literature review of advanced technologies with the potential to improve large truck operation and safety, and examination of contributing factors to large truck crashes, the paper presents specific ITS countermeasures to prevent CMV-related crashes, and discusses costs and gains associated with ITS technology implementation for the trucking industry.
