Review of freight data collection and generation procedures and opportunities: scoping project: next steps

Austroads has therefore commissioned a study to: 1. review the opportunities for cooperation in the collection, generation and transforming of freight data between cities, regions and states; 2. review the benefits of developing a national freight data directory; 3. identify a desirable business model for freight data storage and dissemination; and 4. determine how these three approaches could be advanced. This is a scoping study required for the next phase of work to progress the collection, transformation and sharing of strategic freight data between jurisdictions, agencies and companies. It will inform development of an Austroads policy position and outline ways or case studies for implementing the policy in stages. The first part of the study developed three working papers to address the first three issues above and provide resource documents for the rest of this study and for ongoing work: Working Paper 1: Cooperation in collection, generation and transformation of freight data; Working Paper 2: National Freight Data Directory; and Working Paper 3: Business models for sharing freight data and information. This information together with responses from members of the project committee and external reviewers was used to develop: Working Paper 4: Outlining issues for a policy position; and Working Paper 5: Summarising the actions required to begin implementation. The findings of the study as a whole were brought together in a final report.
