EXPERIMENTAL SAFETY VEHICLES: WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?

THE DEVELOPMENT OF EXPERIMENTAL SAFETY VEHICLES (ESV) FOR WEST GERMANY, JAPAN, THE UNITED KINGDOM, ITALY, FRANCE, AND SWEDEN IS OUTLINED FOR EACH COUNTRY. TWO CRITICISMS LEVIED BY THE FOREIGN COUNTRIES AGAINST U.S. SPECIFICATIONS FOR ESV ARE (1) IN ORDER TO MEET THE SPECIFICATIONS, A HEAVIER, MORE EXPENSIVE CAR WILL NEED TO BE PRODUCED, AND (2) THE RESULTING AGGRESSIVENESS I.E. THE STIFFNESS REQUIRED RESULTS IN MORE EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO OTHER CARS, AND TO PEDESTRIANS IF ACCIDENTS OCCUR. SAFETY FEATURES THAT ARE BEING CONSIDERED IN LIEW OF ESV FOR PROTOTYPE VEHICLES ARE (1) ALTERNATIVES TO AIR BAGS, (2) PNEUMATIC AND HYDRAULIC BUMPERS, (3) FIXED SEATS, (4) ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEMS, (5) EXTERIOR PADDING TO PROTECT PEDESTRIANS AND OTHER CARS, (6) HEAVY PADDING INSIDE OCCUPANTS' COMPARTMENT, AND (7) PERISCOPE ON THE ROOF.
