DYNAMICS OF WHEELED VEHICLES-REPORT 4: A STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF OBSTACLE-VEHICLE-SPEED SYSTEMS

APPROXIMATELY 300 TESTS WERE CONDUCTED WITH AN M37 3/4-TON TRUCK AT VARIOUS VEHICLE SPEEDS OVER SINGLE OBSTACLES OF VARIOUS HEIGHTS AND SHAPES. DATA FOR ACCELERATION-TIME HISTORY, VEHICLE SPEED, AND VEHICLE PITCH ANGLE, AND EVENT MARKINGS WERE RECORDED ON FREQUENCY-MODULATED ANALOG TAPE, AND THE TAPE WAS PROCESSED BY AN ANALOG COMPUTER. THE FOLLOWING PARAMETERS WHERE DETERMINED (AT THE VEHICLE CENTER OF GRAVITY) FOR EACH TEST: (A) PEAK, ROOT MEAN SQUARE, AND MEAN ROOT MEAN SQUARE VALUES OF VERTICAL ACCELERATION, AND THE VECTOR SUM OF VERTICAL AND LONGITUDINAL ACCELERATION COMPONENTS; AND (B) VEHICLE IMPACT SPEED AND AVERAGE SPEED DURING TRAVERSAL OF THE OBSTACLE. A STRATEGY FOR DISPLAYING THE OUTCOME OF THESE TESTS IN COMPACT GRAPHIC FORM WAS DEVISED. THE GRAPHIC FORM IS USEFUL FOR PREDICTING VEHICLE VIBRATION SEVERITY CAUSED BY TRANSVERSAL OF SINGLE OBSTACLES AND CAN BE INCLUDED EASILY IN COMPREHENSIVE MODELS OF VEHICLE MOBILITY. /AUTHOR/
