Sustaining improvements in road safety outcomes
This paper sets out the factors that have contributed to gains in road safety performance in Victoria and the learnings flowing from recent experience. Measures to sustain future improvement in road safety outcomes are identified. These measures include the fundamental importance of strengthening co-ordination and management arrangements and partnerships, and building upon known effective countermeasures which have been implemented, or are in prospect. A key measure is 'new thinking' which extends to implementing a safe system approach; developing a 'social contract' understanding between government and the community about complementary roles in improving road safety; supporting development of relevant consumer activity; capturing emerging technology opportunities and monitoring and responding to the emergence of any adverse trends. The paper also refers to the importance of timely, consistent advice in providing essential support for the political process to improve prospects for public leadership. It concludes with a reminder that the community can have the level of road trauma it is prepared to accept.
