PEDESTRIANIZATION IN DUTCH TOWNS /IN DUTCH/

THE AUTHOR CONSIDERS THE GROWING INTEREST RECENTLY SHOWN IN THE NETHERLANDS IN THE PEDESTRIANIZATION OF TOWN CENTERS AND MENTIONS EXPERIENCES IN COVENTRY, ROTTERDAM, COLOGNE, ESSEN, KASSEL. THE MAJORITY OF DUTCH TOWNS HAVE SMALL TOWN CENTERS FOR WHICH SOLUTIONS MAY OFTEN BE SIMPLE. MECHANICAL SYSTEMS SUCH AS TRAVELATORS ARE NOT EXPECTED TO BE USED. THE "PEDESTRIAN AREA" CONCEPTION AND ITS EFFECT MUST BE VIEWED AS ESSENTIAL PARTS OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF CITY CENTERS. SOME RESEARCH ON PEDESTRIANIZATION HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT IN A NUMBER OF TOWNS IN THE NETHERLANDS AND HAS SHOWN A WIDE RANGE OF POSSIBILITIES OF TREATING THE FINANCIAL, ECONOMIC, JURIDICAL PROBLEMS ARISING FROM PEDESTRIANIZATION. MUNICIPAL POLICY WILL HAVE TO BE CLEARLY DEFINED AS THE DEVELOPMENT OF PEDESTRIAN AREAS LEADS TO A STRONG CONCENTRATION OF SHOPS. A SERIES OF EXAMPLES SHOWS CONDITIONS IN 1970 IN WHICH DIFFERENCE IS MADE BETWEEN SOLUTIONS FOR HISTORIC TOWN CENTERS AND THOSE FOR NEW OR RENOVATED CENTERS. ONE SPECICIC PROBLEM IN HISTORIC CITIES IS TO FIND A SATISFACTORY WAY OF LINKING THE HISTORIC CITY CENTER WITH THE COMPLETELY NEW EXPANSION OF THE TOWN CENTER. /TRRL/
