Promoting optimal use of local materials
This document aims to: 1. identify the progress made over the last decade with respect to soil and/or rock treatments in the area of road earthworks, and more specifically since the publication of PIARC's 1997 report: "Equipment and methods specific to soil treatment work"; 2. look at developments in the use of local materials in building embankments, subgrade or other structures in certain countries and add to the information already provided in PIARC's reports: "Marginal materials: state of the art" and "Testing of marginal materials" published in 1989 and 1991 respectively. It should be noted that in the second part of this document, any off-specification natural materials have been deliberately excluded from local materials. The study solely focused on waste materials and industrial by-products. In fact, it quickly became apparent that the inclusion of non-traditional natural materials required specific skills and knowledge of the local environment; these requirements were difficult to fulfill from within the existing work group.
