Lessons in managing business excellence

The Business Excellence Framework is being implemented at the City of Tea Tree Gully in order to address the requirements of South Australian Local Government Act legislation; that 'efficiency and effectiveness examinations' may be undertaken. The steps taken to influence the adoption of business excellence principles throughout the organisation are described. The methodology has included building staff commitment, communicating the principles, planning the strategy, process improvement reviews, an organisational self-assessment and developing an organisational improvement plan. Conclusions and lessons learnt during the study period are discussed. To illustrate the methodology, a process improvement review case study and lessons for the future in the form of checklists and procedures, relationships with stakeholders, prioritising issues and resourcing are discussed.
