RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT, DESIGN AND PROTECTION OF HIGH LEVEL MASTS - PART 1: RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

DETAILS AND RESULTS OF TESTS WHICH ARE NECESSARY IN ORDER TO PROVIDE RELIABLE DESIGN DATA FOR HIGH-LEVEL LIGHTING MASTS ARE GIVEN. IT IS SHOWN THAT WIND-EXCITED OSCILLATIONS DO NOT OCCUR TO AN UNACCEPTABLE EXTENT AND THAT SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS ARE UNNECESSARY. APPROPRIATE WIND FORCE COEFFICIENTS ARE DEDUCED FROM WIND-TUNNEL TESTS ON A MODEL. MEASUREMENTS OF THE STRENGTH OF DOOR OPENINGS IN A HIGH-LEVEL MAST SHOW THAT THE STRENGTH OF THE BASE SECTION CAN BE MADE ADEQUATE WITHOUT SPECIAL STRENGTHENING, AND THAT THERE IS A CONSIDERABLE ADVANTAGE IN ROUNDING THE ENDS OF THE OPENINGS. THE INFORMATION RELATES PRIMARILY TO THE USE OF STEEL TUBES, BUT IS APPLICABLE TO ANY TYPE OF HIGH-LEVEL INSTALLATION. /TRRL/
