The influence of crude oil on bitumen quality
Crude oils can be categorized by their origin, density, sulphur content and predominant hydrocarbon type. Crude oil is a highly complex mixture of paraffinic, naphthalenic and aromatic hydrocarbons, with varying small percentages of sulphur, and trace elements of metals. The selection of crude oil or feedstock for any refinery is geared towards maximizing the efficiency of production within the constraints of the final products' quality and specifications. For bitumen production, the predominant hydrocarbon type of naphthalenic nature produces better on grade bitumen. On the other hand, the paraffinic crude oil type normally produces brittle bitumen that generally doesn't perform well in the ductility specifications. As bitumen does not have a sulphur specification or limits as for automotive fuels, the high sulphur content of a heavy crude oil poses no problem for the refinery in making quality bitumen.
