A study on the relationship between roadside development and accident rates

This study explores the relationship between rapid roadside development growth and accident rates along Federal Road 2, Jalan Kuantan-Gambang which is one of the gateways to Kuantan city. The research area covers a 24 kilometer stretch of road where most of the roadside areas are residential areas, business areas, shop lots and educational institutions. It is a dual carriageway divided road which experiences heavy traffic flow and consequently has recorded a high number of accidents from year to year. The findings showed that there is a positive relationship between roadside development and accident rates but the most significant causes of accidents along Jalan Kuantan-Gambang turn out to be access to commercial areas. Regulation of development alongside the road should be considered to make sure it does not become a major road safety concern in future years.
