Overview of ITS development in Malaysia

Transportation authorities in Malaysia are looking for intelligent transport systems (ITS) to better manage, operate and optimise the operational effectiveness of existing transportation infrastructure. Some ITS applications were already existence in Malaysia but these applications were installed in an ad hoc manner with little coordination among various operators and the usage was limited to their individual requirements. This led to problems in the areas of inter-operability and compatibility. The Malaysian Ministry of Works has initiated the ITS master plan study to develop a comprehensive "roadmap" setting the direction and framework for the deployment of ITS applications in Malaysia for the period of ten years in a coordinated and efficient manner. The plan recommended the immediate development of the Malaysian ITS system architecture that would provide related government agencies with the directions in which ITS applications could be deployed uniformly by all the stakeholders independent of technologies.
