An investigation on relationship between drivers' personal characteristics and understanding of traffic signs

This investigation concerns the perception and understanding of traffic signs among specific groups of drivers based on their personal characteristics. The characteristics considered here include age, gender, educational background and driving experience. A questionnaire specially prepared to collect the necessary data was distributed to over 400 respondents. A total of 40 symbolic warning, regulatory, temporary and guide signs and nine questions for common skill and driving ethics were considered. These findings are important for the design of road signs and also for the proper allocation of resources in the field of traffic education and accident prevention.
