STATISTICAL PRESENTATION OF ROADWAY PHOTOMETRIC DATA

THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES INVOLVED IN THE STATISTICS OF PHOTOMETRIC DATA ARE DISCUSSED, AND SOLUTIONS TO ASSOCIATED PROBLEMS ARE PROPOSED. THE REPRESENTATION OF INEXACT NUMBERS (TEST DATA) AND THEIR TIE-IN WITH THE USE OF STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY IS BRIEFLY EXAMINED. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF NUMBER UNDER COMPUTATION, SUGGESTED LUMINAIRE TESTING PROCEDURES, SOME TEST RESULTS, AND THEIR ANALYSIS AND DISPLAY ARE DISCUSSED. EXAMPLES ARE PRESENTED TO ILLUSTRATE POSSIBILITIES AND SHOW TRENDS. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF COMPUTATION AND THE DESIGN OF EXPERIMENTS. TYPICAL VALUES OBTAINED FOR SPECIFIC LUMINAIRE CHARACTERISTICS ARE TABULATED. IN A DISCUSSION OF PROPOSED PHOTOMETRIC CURVE FORMAT, STATISTICAL CONCEPTS, MAJOR FORMAT DIFFERENCES FROM PRESENT PHOTOMETRIC CURVES, AND APPLICATION OF DATA ARE CONSIDERED. PROBLEM AREAS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS METHOD ARE ENUMERATED. AN APPROACH IS SUGGESTED FOR THE HASTENING OF THE ACCEPTANCE OF THE IDEAS PRESENTED HERE.
