INTERCHANGE ILLUMINATION - ENGINEERING AND ECONOMICS

HIGHWAY INTERCHANGES REQUIRE SKILL AND CONCENTRATION FROM DRIVERS DUE TO THE CONTINUOUSLY CHANGING SITUATIONS, BECAUSE OF THIS INTERCHANGE ILLUMINATION HAS DRAWN PARTICULAR ATTENTION FROM LIGHTING DESIGNERS AND SAFETY ENGINEERS. TWO INTERCHANGES, ONE CONVENTIONAL AND THE OTHER COMPLICATED, WERE SELECTED FOR ANALYSIS OF LIGHTING LAYOUTS. LUMINAIRE MOUNTING HEIGHTS, LAMP SIZE, AND POLE LOCATION, GLARE CONTROL AND DRIVER ORIENTATION ARE DISCUSSED. COST COMPARISONS WERE MADE FOR SEVEN MOUNTING HEIGHTS FROM 30 TO 150 FEET, WITH 400- 700- AND 1000- WATT MERCURY LAMPS. IN GENERAL, FOR CONVENTIONAL AND OFTEN MORE COMPLICATED INTERCHANGES, 45-TO 65-FOOT MOUNTING HEIGHTS WITH FIXED LUMINAIRES ARE THE MOST ECONOMICAL.
