1974: THE YEAR YOUR TRUCKS GET A REAL BRAKE

BRAKE AND BRAKE CONTROL SYSTEM MANUFACTURERS ARE OFFERING SYSTEMS WHICH WILL MEET THE FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 121 (FMVSS 121) WHICH SPECIFIES MINIMUM AIR BRAKE PERFORMANCE STANDARDS FOR TRUCKS AND CRANE CARRIERS MANUFACTURED AFTER SEPTEMBER 1974. THE EFFECTS OF FMVSS 121 ON TRUCKING OPERATION AND THE EFFORTS OF MANUFACTURERS TO MEET THE NEW REQUIREMENTS ARE REPORTED. LARGER BRAKES AND DISC BRAKES MANUFACTURED TO MEET THE STOPPING DISTANCE REQUIREMENT AND THE ANTI-SKID OR ANTI-LOCKUP SYSTEM DESIGNED TO MEET THE NO-LOCKUP PROVISION ARE REVIEWED. ALL MANUFACTURERS CLAIM THAT THE SYSTEMS WILL BE TESTED UNDER ALL POSSIBLE CONDITIONS. THEY ALSO OFFER A TESTER WHICH PLUGS INTO THE SYSTEM. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE FMVSS 121 ARE PRESENTED. LATERAL STABILITY AND ANTI-WHEEL LOCKUP SYSTEMS ARE DISCUSSED AND SIX SPECIFIC SKID CONTROL FEATURES ARE LISTED. THE AIR COMPRESSOR, AIR RESERVOIRS, BREAKAWAY VALVES, BRAKE ACTUATION AND RELEASE TIMING, AND PARKING AND EMERGENCY BRAKE ARE SOME OF THE ASPECTS REVIEWED.
