The benefits of regional collaboration in managing network transportation operations
Regional collaboration has become an essential element in providing safe, reliable and efficient transportation systems. This paper illustrates the benefits of regional collaboration between agencies and jurisdictions with respect to transportation network operations by showcasing some of the best examples of regional collaboration and coordination in the U.S. today. The five case studies highlighted range from a simple collaboration between four road maintenance agencies across three counties to a multi-state wireless network that integrates transportation and criminal justice information for a multitude of agencies. Common benefits identified include: savings in procurement, expanded service area coverage, new funding opportunities, and formalized regional operations structures. Challenges to regional collaboration and performance measures used to evaluate these programs are also discussed.
